The Benefits of Wearing Gloves in Preventing Hand Injuries: A Safety Perspective

8/23/2024

Hand injuries happen every seven seconds, and this preventable problem accounts for more than 23 percent of all work-related injuries. Employees face potential injury when not provided with personal protective equipment (PPE) and training, working in low lighting, or working with defective or dangerous machinery.

This issue impacts more than 1 million workers annually and is the second leading cause of workplace absences.

Hand injuries are costly as hirelings may be eligible for worker's compensation; the average settlement varies between $38,000 and $92,000. Depending on the severity of the injury and whether it is permanent or life-impacting, the settlement amount can be upward of $630,000.

Hand injuries cost companies:
  • HSE
  • Insurance
  • Litigation
  • Monetary
  • Operative downtime
  • Treatment

Hand injuries also raise the Occupational Safety and Health Administration's recordable incident rate, which measures a company's safety performance. Blunt trauma and sharp object injuries are the most common culprits.

OSHA mandates employers to require employees to wear gloves when exposed to hazards like harmful substances or at risk of lacerations and cuts. Employees must also wear PPE when at risk of thermal or chemical burns or exposure to extreme temperatures.

Hand injuries are the number one preventable accident across industries, and gloves are critical PPE. Wearing gloves allows workers to achieve the highest productivity safely.

Who Faces the Greatest Risk of Hand Injury?

  • Construction workers
  • Cooks
  • Demolition workers
  • Heavy machinery operators
  • Manufacturing workers
  • Restaurant workers
  • Roofers
  • Servers
  • Warehouse workers

What Types of Injuries Do Workers Risk Incurring?

  • Avulsion fractures
  • Bone fractures
  • Burns
  • Crush injuries
  • Dislocations
  • Frostbite
  • Hand amputation
  • Hypodermic punctures
  • Lacerations
  • Nerve damage
  • Puncture wounds
  • Soft tissue damage
  • Sprains
  • Tendon strains
  • Torn ligaments

How Do Safety Gloves Protect Workers from Injury?

Gloves are a type of PPE that protects workers from injuries. Think of gloves as a second skin. They don't sacrifice agility but allow workers to use chemicals, tools, and materials that would otherwise incur injury. It's most important to wear PPE for the job.

Work gloves protect workers from hazards, including:

  • Abrasions
  • Arc hazards
  • Biohazards
  • Chemical
  • Cuts
  • Extreme temperatures
  • Heat hazards
  • High-pressure injuries
  • Impact injuries
  • Infections
  • Punctures
  • Powerful vibrations
  • Trips and falls

When Should Gloves Be Used?

Only some work situations require gloves, which may increase workers' risk of injury if used under the wrong circumstances. Although some jobs could be accomplished without using PPE, it's best practice to follow company guidelines and wear the proper gloves anyway.

Wear gloves when working in cold temperatures, with hot items, metals, chemicals, glass, wood, vibrating tools, biohazards, welding, and grinders.

When Should Gloves Be Avoided?

Don't wear gloves when working with a high-speed, non-smooth-surface, rotating machine that can catch the glove and pull the hand into the machine. Entanglement can cause lacerations, crushing, and amputations.

Avoid using gloves when using:
  • Gears
  • Power drilling tools
  • Power sanding tools
  • Power saw tools like chop saws, table saws, or circular saws
  • Spinning parts of machinery

Safety Glove Types and Benefits

Anti-Vibration Gloves

These work gloves reduce vibration when using heavy tools and machinery or anytime repetitive impact vibration occurs, such as when using rivet guns, jackhammers, or pneumatic tools. They are made of anti-vibration material and are available in full-finger, fingerless, and gel-padded varieties.

Benefits include:
  • Vibration reduction
  • Protection
  • Dexterity

Industries include:

  • Power tool workers
  • Heavy machinery
  • Construction

Cut-Resistant Gloves

These gloves, made from Kevlar, Dyneema, and stainless-steel mesh, protect hands from lacerations and cuts. Workers wear these form-fitting gloves when exposed to machinery and sharp objects. They afford better dexterity than leather gloves. Cut-resistant gloves increase grip and are suited for handling light use hazards.

Benefits include:
  • Dexterity
  • Durability
  • Lightweight
  • Protection
  • Versatility

Industries include:

  • Construction
  • Food processing
  • Glass handling
  • Manufacturing

Disposable Gloves

Use disposable gloves once. They are made of Nitrile, Latex, Polyethylene, and vinyl. They help prevent bacteria and germs from spreading and are suited for industries where contamination or infection is prevalent. They come in various thicknesses, from 3 millimeters to 15 millimeters.

Benefits include:
  • Affordable
  • Protection from bacteria and germs
  • Easy-to-use
  • Versatile

Industries include:
  • Cleaning

  • Versatile

Industries include:

  • Agriculture
  • Assembly
  • Electronics
  • Foodservice

High-Visibility Gloves

High-visibility, reflective, high-vis with impact protection, and high-vis-resistant gloves make workers seeable in low-light conditions. Use these gloves when workers need to be observable.

Benefits include:

  • Easy-to-spot
  • Reflective

Industries include:

  • Construction
  • Transportation
  • Warehouse work

Insulated Gloves

These gloves protect hands from harsh elements and keep the wearer comfortable and warm. They are available in thermal-lined, waterproof, and heavy varieties.

  • Protection against electrical shock
  • Better grip

Industries include:
  • Cold storage
  • Outdoor work

  • Ski resorts

Leather Gloves

Animal hides, such as goatskin, cowhide, or deerskin, create leather gloves resistant to cuts, punctures, abrasions, and splinters. Driver's, welding, and work gloves are three examples of cut-resistant PPE.

Benefits include:

  • Comfortable
  • Cut-resistant
  • Durable
  • Insulated

Industries include:

  • Construction
  • Landscaping
  • Manufacturing
  • Welding

Waterproof Gloves

Waterproof gloves, made of nitrile, neoprene, and PVC, protect workers from moisture and are designed for industries where workers are exposed to damp conditions.

Benefits include:
  • Better Grip
  • Long-lasting
  • Waterproof
  • Wide range of applications

Industries include:
  • Fishing
  • Food processing
  • Agriculture

How to Properly Use Safety Gloves

Check for wear and tear. Report any excessive damage to a supervisor.

Use the right glove for the right job. Gloves are not universal, and one glove will not offer protection against all injuries.

Get the right fit. Improperly fitted gloves will either fall off the hand or restrict mobility and circulation.

Follow all company procedures when donning or taking off gloves. Some gloves require a specific removal process to prevent contamination.

Wash hands after glove removal.
